of your despatch No.176 of the 28th of May, in which you state that you have agreed that Mr.A.J.Darby, Acting Principal Land Surveyor should draw the maxian salary of his post viz. fAZO per annum, with effect from the 1st of May, and ask for sanction for payment to ba

2. I regret that, after full consideration, I cannot sunction this increase, and I would remind you that the pro osal should have been referred to me at an earlier stage in accordance with Colonial Regulation
No.247.
3. Mr.Darby's contention that he has dways been placed in charge during the absence of the Principal Land Surveyor cannot be regarded as having any bearing on the question of the remuneration which he receives while discharging the duties of his substantive appoint-
ment.
I cannot recognize any claims baged on the tenure of an acting appointment. The question whether Mr.Darby or other officer would succeed Mr.Rees, in the event of his vacating his appointment is one which cannot
